Yarn help...

I would like to thank everyone who purchased my latest Granny Flats cushion pdf
for the "giveaway" price...
and a huge thank you to all the dear friends
who have been purchasing it at the "normal" price...
Your support is so amazing...

I too have had a little splurge tonight on etsy
and purchased a copy of a Japanese crochet book...from here...
But I am in need of a bit of yarn help...
I adore these socks...

but am not sure what type of yarn is best...
and as I will only have the picture to guide me...
I was hoping that someone might know what would work...
I was thinking cotton..
But as cotton yarn is not easy to find in Australia
maybe my overseas friends have a favorite that they like to use and would suit this project...
Or maybe you have this book and made the pattern...and know what works best...

My book will take a week or so to arrive
which will give me time to find some yarn...
so all help will be greatly appreciated...

Thanks...

oh I almost forgot..I will re-list more patterns in the morning as it is rather late here..
and know that it is always nice to purchase a pattern and get it sooner than later...

It looks like the same cotton crochet yarn used to crochet doilies. I've seen some at Spotlight, but was a few months ago now though. I bought a bright pink roll and it wasn't that expensive either :)

If your going to make socks then you can get a sock yarn which has a bit of nylon in it to stop them rolling down and going out of shape. There are lots of makers of sock yarn - Opal, Regia and lots of other independent companies.

Michelle, I am not a huge fan of making socks, but I have knit a few pairs. I would crochet it in a wool blend or if you like cotton make sure it is a bled. Cotton tends to expand as you wear it and I don't want you to have droopy socks after all that work.
Happy monday,
Meredith

I wouldn't be using cotton for socks, cotton is so limp. you need something with a bit of stretch - socks... sock yarn!

Sorry, should have proof-read before I posted! I knitted myself a lovely pair of fingerless gloves using Moda Vera Bamboo/Cotton Yarn from Spotlight. It comes in lots of different colours, and has more elasticity than cotton. Maybe worth a try? My gloves are lovely and soft, and cause no allergies, as I cannot wear wool. The socks look gorgeous. Good luck deciphering the pattern! :)

Thank you all for your helpful comments...
I never thought of sock yarn...
Really don't know why I didn't...
The picture looked like a cotton or something "natural"...but I understand now that the socks would get all out of shape and stretch etc...
Thanks...

It looks to me like a cotton/linen blend, and it doesn't look that stretchy in the picture. Cotton/Bamboo might work.
I think it's no more than a DK weight, but not too much finer.

Love your blog!

I'm clueless about this kind of thing. I'm still yearning to find easy--I mean really easy--instructions to make my first pair of socks. So no expert advice here, although I do agree these are lovely.

Try Fyberspates, Natural Dye Yarn Studio or Easy Knits all online and all do fabulous sock yarns. Nx

hi, i also have this book, i love the linen focus- I bought it last year when in Tokyo and the sale assistant recommended to use linen 4ply yarn or a linen cotton blend. Perhaps try sparrow by quince & co or louet euroflax?

Hello, I have this book and I'm french, so I can try to translate :
It's a 3mm hook, the yarn is pure linen or a mix linen-cotton (with more linen than cotton). You made first the heel, then do the sock (beginning by the top) and join the heel. After, you pick up top stitches to make the top border.
I'm sure they're gonna to be really nice, live everything you do !
I'm sorry for my bad english and hope this have helped you !

I am not sure about the type of yarn, because well, I cannot for the life of me crochet. I have tried with great failure. What I can offer is some advise about the bottom. Make them a normal stitch because I have socks such as these and when the bottoms are lacy they are uncomfortable to walk with. That is all I know.

Thank you again my dear friends for some fantastic advice...
Especially Laure...I will keep your advice in mind when I try to read the pattern...and now I am off to look for some interesting linen-cotton blend that has some stretchy sock quality to it..."One can hope"...

Well as you know Shell, I know nothing about yarn, but I do know about socks! And those are the most fantastic things I have ever seen!!!!
Also, my best friend Yay, being Japanese, may be of some assistance if you want a proper translation of the terms and descriptions. Just scan them over to me, and I'll get it de-coded! xx

I found this site that explains a lot of the Japanese terminology for crochet and knitting patterns and it is very useful, if you scroll down it will give you the terms for the weight of yarn you need and the yarn content as well. http://www.tata-tatao.to/knit/japanese/e-index.html

I have the same book and want to make the socks too! I ordered linen yarn (it's almost like string) from Habu Textiles in NYC. It's spendy, but lovely nonetheless. I couldn't figure out what hook to use, so the above comment was a huge help! And, I'm also still learning the international crochet diagram. It's going to take a while! :)

I love this book too! I can't remember where I first saw it but it was love at first site :) Looks like you found a far easier place to buy yours though - I ended up finding it on an Italian site ;) I haven't used it yet I'm afraid - very impressed with your socks :) Kx
