Henry Loves Carnations

Henry's favorite flower is the
Carnation...
And thank you Renee
for thinking so too
They do smell sweet...

Henry has dreams of one day wearing a smart dinner jacket
with a carnation in his lapel
he thinks it will make him look very dapper and full of high hopes...
I think it would too...
Now for something else I have been up too...

My first chevron blanket...
It is a emotional thing...
I have made this pattern before in a few cushions but I have never made a blanket...

A blanket is everything...and more...
My grandma made these blankets...my mum still makes these blankets...

But I have never...

I have put off...It is something that signifies memories, emotions and age...

I have not been ready to take up the challenge...
To make something that has become a family tradition...
Why all of a sudden do I think I am ready now...

As I crochet this blanket I get all sentimental...
It's just a feeling that is hard to describe and put into words...
It came to me after I took this photo...
That it was 13 years ago that my grandma pasted away...
At this time of year...
Maybe that's why I have been so out of sorts lately and
feel like I am loosing direction...
Maybe that's why I started this blanket...
To get direction...I hope so...

Not too long ago I blogged about learning the basketweave stitch for the same reasons. I have a lovely, heavy, large basketweave blanket that my grandmother made me. I knew it took a lot of work, but learning the stitch made that blanket look all the more amazing. I often think of her when I'm crocheting. Even now, 18 years (oh my!) after her death, I have moments of heavy mourning for her. I love that this craft can connect us in some way.

It's beautiful!
Just imagine your granny next to you while you make the blanket, her eyes are sparkling, she smiles, full of pride and love for you. She helps with your stitches and is pleased as punch that you are carrying on a lovely tradition. Now, there will be more of your gran in the world, a gorgeous blanket to wrap you in warmth and beauty.

Gorgeous blanket - just love those colours.

Quite apart from the fact that my gran was a very gifted crafter - those colours were her favourites. Thanks for the memories.

What a wonderful connection to have to your grandma, Michelle.

That's how I came to learn to sew. My grandma was a beautiful seamstress and after she passed away I suddenly wanted to be able to sew like she did. I treasure her old thimble and some engraved scissors and think of her often as I sew.

I think your chevron blanket is absolutely gorgeous.

i think your blanket is gorgeous and what a wonderful way to connect with someone special who may not be there in person but is definitely there in spirit.

Your blanket is gorgeous - I love that ripple stitch with the eyelets (made a baby-sized one myself recently!). It is lovely tribute to make something your Granny would have loved. x

Your blanket is gorgeous, michelle. These sorts of traditions are so important. They keep us connected to the women who loved us and they demonstrate that we really were watching and listening and we loved them in return...
Of course Henry likes carnations! It all makes sense now!

Such emotion goes into blankets as you say for a lot of us I think. I recall all of them and have a sort of pride about each one like it is an accomplishment. To give or receive one is magic.

Beautiful, beautiful blankie, Michelle! How wonderful that you can perhaps sit and enjoy the wonderful memories you must have of your Grandma while you crochet.
Hugs to you!

Wow!! Thanks Michelle, I've never won anything before!

Everyone discounts carnations but I think they're so colourful and pretty - and at best -- not expensive!!!

Your blanket is beautiful!!!

Have a lovely day!
